Electoral Boundaries Commission – A Change Affecting Pleasant Bay
The Government of Nova scotia has established a new Electoral Boundaries Commission. Its purpose is to recommend a new provincial electoral district for the Acadian region of Cheticamp and surrounding area. This would mean dividing the current Inverness district in two to create a new Cheticamp and area district.
The Commission held hearings in July and early October in Cheticamp, Margaree, Mabou and Whycocomagh, but they did not see fit to hold a hearing in Pleasant Bay. The Commission is now accepting written submissions sent in by email, however.
There are three possible options on the table at this point. The first option is a district that includes Pleasant Bay, Cheticamp, Grand Etang and Margaree as far as Doyle’s Bridge. The second option starts at Pleasant Bay and includes Cheticamp, Grand Etang and all of the Margarees. The third option is to maintain the status quo.
If the Commission decides to establish a new district, the concern is that the MLA will almost certainly be from Cheticamp and will put Cheticamp’s interests ahead of our own, like they did when they tried to divert our funding for our FM booster (102.5 FM) for their own purposes.
